Books I Love

Victoria Schade - Bonding With Your Dog
This is the most innovative book I've read on dog minds. It will give you some more insight into how dogs/people communicate and how some things people do chip away, and eventually destroys any bond we might be trying so hard to get.

Temple Grandin
Born Autistic, she thinks much like an animal, in pictures, not language. Her special gift has changed the cattle industry by redesigning cattle slaughter houses. Her mind allows her to just know that the yellow rain coat hanging off a fence post flapping in the wind is going to severely disturb the cattle. She has a couple books that gives regular people a little insight into how an animals mind works.

The Monks of New Skeet - The Art of Raising a Puppy
This book has been around for years and has tried and true methods inside, they have revised and pulled out their "Alpha Rolling" method in new publications. The Monks have a deep bond with their dogs and they are often attached at the waist by a short leash. (perfect for you if you have a dog/pup that is always getting into things) Their dogs see them as a strong reliable leader, but some of their methods should not be attempted without consulting a trainer to deal with your dogs specific concerns. I also suggest How to Be Your Dogs Best Friend.

Koehler Method of Dog Training
Walt Disney movie star dogs were trained with this reliable method along with all kinds of great pet and law protection dogs. I found a copy at a used book store, and is available on the internet as cheap as $0.32. This is the method modern trainers call "old school" and cruel but I found it to be very interesting. The Koehler Method should only be used after you read the entire book, twice. Some methods are harsh and should only be used if your dogs life is at stake.

Desmond Morris - Dog Watching
Not just another training book, but covers many interesting topics written by someone who has spent a lifetime observing behavior in many species.

Barbara Woodhouse - No Bad Dogs
I admire this bold British woman who devoted her life to dogs. She trained dogs in the so called "old school" ways but her mental connection with dogs was what brought me closer to my own dogs and the ones I help. Barbara cured dogs in minutes of their fears and phobias. She knew people projected their own fears and instabilities into their dogs. Once she took charge, the dogs changed instantly and the problems melted away, the hard part was changing the owners behaviours.

Dogs That Know When Their Owners are Coming Home: and Other Unexplained Powers of Animals by Rupert Sheldrake
Many years after reading Barbara Woodhouse, I read a book that referenced her mental training technique with dogs. Ruperts' book includes many tales of animals able to communicate mentally with other animals and some special humans.

Brian Kilcommons - Good Owners Great Dogs
All of his books are a good read. His methods have a nice balance of positive and negative reinforcement. Also has a good booklet called Childproofing your Dog.

Cesar Milan -The Dog Whisperer
Of course no library is complete without every volume of Cesar Milan. Read his books and watch his shows, your dog will thank you for it. Some people view his methods as harsh, but keep in mind, these dogs are on death row and he saves them. His most important lessons are 100% accurate.... exercise, discipline and then affection, in that order. Confidence, leadership and providing your dogs with life's needs is what having a pack is all about.

Dog encyclopedias on health and nutrition
You can't have enough of them. They all have different information and the more you know, the better off your dog will be. Magazines like Animal Wellness or moderndog are also your best source for current information, breakthroughs and just really cool things.

There are as many dog training books available today as their are different training techniques. Read as much as you can, ask other dog owners what worked for them and pick a method that suits you and your dog. Dogs have a superb ability to learn another language quickly. Humans are not so quick to learn doglish. The best thing we can do for our canine counterparts is to be consistent and level headed every time we interact with our dogs.
